Making Brevo Automation
Picture this: you are about to have a website makeover and you eventually encountered intimidating web design jargons. For someone who is just getting started, we know that this scenario can be daunting and overwhelming at first.
But worry no more! In this article, we’ve compiled and explained the most important terminologies professional web designers and developers usually talk about. We also added a little background and present-day resources about them for you to have a more updated and in-depth knowledge.
1. cPanel
cPanel is a Unix-based control panel that automates and simplifies the process of hosting a website. It also streamlines common site administration tasks such as database and email account management with an intuitive interface. With cPanel, users can view the site’s stats and manage their own domain name server. In addition, users can access all components of the cPanel through a standard web browser.
2. Banner
This is the graphic usually placed at the top of a website for advertising. They can either be static or animated images and text. Banners are great when it comes to drawing attention to special offers and promotions on your website. In advertising, a Web Banner or Banner Ad entails inserting an advertisement into a web page. They function the same way as traditional advertisements but differ in results as they are monitored real-time and targeted to the viewer’s interest.
3. CMS
A Content Management System is a software application that allows its users to edit, delete, and manage the content of a website from a visual interface. Typically, it is used to facilitate collaboration in the workplace with Enterprise Content Management, and to facilitate collaborative authoring for websites with Web Content Management. These two both have two components: a Content Management Application (CMA) that allows the user to control the content of a website, and a Content Delivery Application that provides the back-end services that supports the management of content from the CMA. It doesn’t require any programming knowledge to execute a successful CMS as it can be open-sourced or built from scratch depending on the budget of your web project and the needs of your organisation.
4. Website – Back-end
Front-end and back-end are terms used to characterise program interfaces and services relative to the initial user. The part of the website that users have a direct interaction with refers to the front-end application. The back-end, on the other hand, refers to the part hidden from regular website visitors. It generally includes the information structure, applications, and the CMS of the site. This may interact directly with the front-end, or perhaps may be called from an intermediate program that facilitates front-end and back-end activities.
5. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
SEO is the internet marketing practice of increasing the traffic of your website through organic search results. It involves improving the quality of the content, ensuring that it’s rich in relevant keywords and organising it by using subheads, bullet points, and bold and italic characters. SEO ensures that the site’s HTML is optimised in a way that a search engine can determine them and consequently display it as a result of relevant searches. It makes your sites appear on the first pages of a search engine by using algorithms, relevant keywords, and metadata aimed towards particular demographics.
6. Search Engine Marketing (SEM)
SEM is one of the most effective ways to grow your business in an increasingly competitive marketplace. It refers to the practice of marketing a business using paid advertising such as brief copy, product listings, and video clips on search engines to drive user traffic to your website. SEM’s greatest strength is that it offers advertisers the opportunity to put their product in front of motivated customers who are ready to buy at the precise moment they’re ready to make a purchase. No other advertising medium can do this, which is why SEM is an effective way to grow your business.
7. Contact Form
Basically a compilation of questions to be filled out by a visitor, a contact form is used for anything that can satisfy a customer’s needs. It’s an avenue where customers can send their comments, questions, or enquiries about your service. Successful web design agencies know how to create an effective contact form and response email in a way that it’s similar to communicating with a person.
8. Call-to-Action
A call-to-action or CTA is a button, arrow, or another graphic element that entices a user to perform a particular action. One way to use a CTA is through a clickable button that may further drive a user into other pages of a website.
9. Domain Name
The domain name is a unique name that identifies a website. Whenever you visit one, the domain name appears in the address bar of the web browser. For example, our domain name is “verzdesign.com.” All domain names have a suffix that helps identify the type of a website such as .com for commercial sites and .org for organisations. Some domain names end with a country code, like “.sg” for Singapore that helps identify the location and audience of the website.
Domain names need to be renewed on a yearly basis similar to the hosting. Some registrars offer discounts when a registrant renews a domain name for periods of 2, 3 or 5 years. When you renew a domain name you should also verify that the contact information is up-to-date.
10. WordPress
WordPress is a CMS based on PHP and MySQL. It has to be installed on a web server to function, which would either be part of an Internet hosting service like WordPress.com, or a network host in its own right like WordPress.org. WordPress was used by more than 29 percent of the top 10 million websites as of January 2018, making it the most popular website management or blogging system in use on the Web.
11. User Interface (UI)
The UI includes visual elements like buttons, icons, and menus used to interact with a website. The growing need of many companies nowadays on making effective websites has led them to prioritise its UI to improve user experience.
12. User Experience (UX)
UX describes the overall experience including emotions, attitudes, and accessibility of a user whenever using the website. It also concerns the creation of applications that give meaningful and personally relevant experiences. A website that provides an effective integration of branding and functionality for UX elicits good emotional responses to the user.
13. User Flow
User flow is the usual path users take when starting on a website and moving towards an action on the site. Acknowledging user flow is considered as an alternative approach to simply designing web pages and applications. It prioritises the needs of the user in the most effective manner possible.
14. Backlinks
Backlinks refer to the links from other websites to yours. These are used to increase your site’s popularity with search engines and eventually get more visits to your site. It’s also considered as a fundamental aspect of SEO, so it is important to use them well. When creating a backlink, your goal should be to get it from other authoritative articles and relevant sites.
15. Web Blog
A blog is an online journal and a very popular method of sharing ideas on the internet. It is also very popular as a marketing tool for companies as it helps improve their SEO. It consists of a series of entries arranged chronologically, devoted to developing discussions on a certain topic.
16. Bounce Rate
A website’s bounce rate is the percentage of people who leave the site after landing on one page. While a very high bounce rate does not bode well for a website, this can sometimes be a good indicator of having good navigation and quality content.
17. Host / Hosting
Web Hosting is a service that provides businesses the elements they need for their website to be accessed on the internet. Meanwhile, a web host is an outlet that delivers this service, and they provide space on a server that’s leased for the client. Often, web hosting companies would prefer you to have a domain before hosting with them. Otherwise, they will help you in purchasing one.
18. HTTPS (SSL)
An HTTPS is what you would usually look for when doing credit card transactions, data transfers, and account logins. HTTPS may stand for HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure. The ‘S’ also identifies the SSL certificate, as its operation is done over a secure and encrypted connection. This certificate allows secure sessions from servers to a browser.
19. Landing Page
A landing page is a page a visitor “lands” upon clicking a link or entering a website. Often, a special landing page is created to elicit specific actions from a new visitor, usually in connection with an advertising or marketing campaign. A good landing page is aimed at a particular traffic, allowing your website to convert a higher percentage of visitors.
20. Thank You Page
A Thank You Page is a web page where visitors are redirected instantly after filling out your contact or enquiry form. A good Thank You Page can be a hallmark of how a website values its visitors. It should have a message that expresses thanks for filling out your form, as well as instructions on what will happen next.
21. Website (PAGE) Mock-Up
Whenever we design an excellent website, our first step is to create a set of site mock-ups that shows how your site will look like once finished. These mock-ups are flat images and are similar to having a screenshot of a web page. We use them as a way to convey ideas to our clients for further changes, and as a blueprint when developing the site.
22. Mobile Responsive (DESIGN)
As more people are on the go nowadays, websites need to be adapted to mobile devices such as phones and tablets. Mobile-responsive websites have the capability to adjust visuals and content according to any mobile device. This design feature creates countless benefits, such as an improved user experience, sales, and search engine ranking. So, choose a web design agency that’s not only knowledgeable but also capable of creating responsive website designs.
23. Google Analytics
Google Analytics is a freemium analytics service that can be used by anyone with a google account. It provides basic analytical tools, such as statistics, that are helpful for SEO and other marketing purposes. Google Analytics is ideal for SMEs because its service has some limitations that make it less suitable for larger enterprises.
24. Sitemap
A sitemap is similar to a directory of all the content on a website. It is normally accessible from at least the front page of the site for two purposes: to help people find what they are looking for on the site and to help search engines find all your links.
25. Image Resolution
Imagine resolution refers to the amount of detail an image has and is usually described by the number of pixels per inch (PPI). An image with a high resolution means it has more details, a better look, and greater quality. On the other hand, images with lower resolutions have fewer pixels, and if those pixels are too large like when it’s stretched, it’s appearance will be ‘pixelated’ like the image below.
26. Stock Photo
A stock photo is a professionally shot digital photograph available for online licensing, usually as an alternative to hiring a photographer for a given project. Users can get them from stock photo websites that offer images licensed for one-time use, or sell royalty-free rights to photos that for repeated use once they purchased it.
27. HTML
HyperText Markup Language (HTML) is a base language used for creating a website. One that is created in pure HTML is static and only interacts with the visitor in the most basic ways, storing and returning no data aside from what’s consistently on the page. This language has been a recommendation by the World Wide Web Consortium and is generally adhered to by major browsers such as Chrome and Firefox. In 2014, HTML developers released HTML5 to provide better functionality by having less dependence on plugins, device independence, and public development processes.
28. Magento
Magento is an open source eCommerce platform that offers complete flexibility for online merchants. This platform enables the user to control the look, content, and functionality of their online store while offering great marketing, SEO, and catalog management tools. We believe that Magento is one of the best eCommerce platforms available today as their versions range from community open source to massive and large-scale enterprise Software as a Service-based system (SaaS).
29. CSS (Style Sheet)
Cascading Style Sheets or CSS are documents that contain the overall appearance of a website. They differ from the HTML structure to reduce repetition of the styling of elements on multiple pages. A style sheet can control the layout of a website and may only need to change once to have an effect on multiple pages. With CSS, the web page creator’s style sheet takes priority, but it’s recommended that browsers provide ways for the viewer to somehow override the style attributes. It’s also likely these browsers will have various implementations of the CSS, so the creator will likewise have to test the page on different browsers.
30. Search-Engine Friendly
A search-engine friendly website is one that search engines can easily read and find all the links. This also refers to a site that search engines prefer because of its optimisation.
